The idyllic property of Sharyanka is surrounded by gorgeous, lush mature gardens and a dramatic backdrop of steep mountains. This comfortable and stylish lakeside home is one of the most charming in Atitlan, Guatemala with spectacular views out across one of the best natural wonders of the world: Lake Atitlan. And with views of all three volcanoes.

The property consists of 4 houses: the main vacation rental and lake-front home of Villa Verdad, and then 3 cozy, wooden-built, rustic casitas behind Verdad. In order: Poder, Armonia and Claridad.

The main house was built and designed by the owner and her then husband, an architect, in 1998. In 1999 the casita Armonia was built, followed by Claridad in 2000 and Poder in 2007.

The property is accessed from a wooden boardwalk that runs along the shore for most of Santa Cruz. (This is due to the increasing level of the lake over the past few years.) There is a wooden door through which you enter the property and walk for about 5 meters (16’) until you reach the gardens. Then in another 8 meters (26’) you are at the main house: Villa Verdad.

Beside Verdad is a Sauna and behind it a Meditation Pagoda by a small waterfall. The land rises quite steeply up behind Verdad and, scattered on various terraces, as the property reaches up to meet the mountain side that dominates the back of it, are three rustic, but cozy wooden casitas: Poder, Armistad, & Claridad.

Shayanka is on the Bay of Paxanax, which is part of the village of Santa Cruz la Laguna, on the north shore of Lake Atitlan. It is a quiet, peaceful bay with a small, but friendly community, as well as a couple of hotels. A short walk away (about 15 minutes) is the main part of Lower Santa Cruz. Upper Santa Cruz is where the main village is with a local Mayan population of just over 3,000.

There are bodegas housing gardening equipment, tools and a washer and dryer.

There is a fantastic, reliable and friendly guardian who helps guests while they rent and tends to all the maintenance issues on the property, as well as works his green fingers of the spectacular, lush, colourful gardens which run throughout the property.

As well as a sauna and meditation pagoda the house has a private dock.

SANTA CRUZ LA LAGUNA

The area of Santa Cruz, and in particular Paxanax Bay, are amongst the quietest around the lake, and boast the most spectacular views of the sun rise, sun set, AND all-day-long vistas of all three (some say five) volcanoes across the lake!

Santa Cruz and Paxanax Bay are only accessible by boat, but are the closest to the main transport hub and commercial center on the Lake: Panajachel (Pana to locals), which is only a 10-20mins boat ride. Public boats ply back and forth along the north shore from Pana to San Pedro from 6am to approximately 5pm, stopping at villages along the way. Pana is where you find banks, ATMs, grocery stores, delis, cafes, pharmacies, restaurants, bars, and the wonderful local market overflowing with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Santa Cruz is a Kakchiquel village of approx. 3,000. The village itself is set up a steep road accessible by tuk tuk, pickup, or on foot (about a 20 min steep walk from the public dock). Here you can visit CECAP, a vocational center for young people from around the lake, where students learn a multitude of things from cooking, sewing, computer skills, and carpentry. Be sure to visit their café with spectacular views. The small catholic village church is one of the oldest around the lake.
The rest of Lower Santa Cruz runs along the shore, where five hotels (Isla Verde, Arca de Noe, La Iguana Perdida, Villa Sumaya & Laguna Lodge) provide restaurant meals throughout the day. Paxanax Bay lies about a 15 minute walk to the east of the main public dock along a series of paths (some rocky) and boardwalks (see map), and has its own public dock for access to properties in this quiet and tranquil bay. It is perfect for morning swims when the water is smooth and flat before the afternoon Xocomil wind blows from the south.
